Nature Methods is a forum for the publication of novel methods and significant improvements to tried-and-tested basic research techniques in the life sciences. The journal publishes method developments (Articles, Brief Communications), performance comparisons of related, established methods (Analyses), and collections of tools or datasets of broad interest (Resources) as primary research papers. The journal also publishes overviews of recent technical and methodological developments (Reviews, Perspectives) and opinion pieces (Comments).

Nature Protocols publishes secondary research articles - predominantly Protocols and techniques-related Reviews, Perspectives, Correspondences, Matters Arising, Commentaries, and Consensus Statements - all of which are based on published primary research papers. It covers new techniques and technologies, as well as established methods, used in all fields of the biological, chemical and clinical sciences. Each Protocol contains a full list of reagents and equipment, timing information, and step-by-step procedures (instructions for performing the experiment), as well as information on designing and adapting the technique, its advantages and limitations compared to alternatives, troubleshooting, analysing data, and interpreting results.

Presents procedures and protocols of research methods that will be adopted by the tissue engineering community as research is translated into clinical applications to help the field to grow and mature.
