Library Education: Research and Information Skills Training

Professor Sarah Dennis from Sydney University shares the findings of a research project which assessed the health literacy of allied health patients in Western Sydney (LINK to article) and providing some suggestions for how staff can be sensitive to the needs of people with health literacy challenges.
Gia Vigh, Library Manager, Liverpool Hospital presents on preparing patient information resources including readability, images and copyright, consumer and peer feedback, current procedures, and the SWSLHD Catalogue of Patient Information.
Andrew Smith, Nurse Educator, EODS, SWSLHD, concludes the session with an overview of TeachBack, a simple yet effective communication tool for clinicians to check patient understanding.

Dr Zaidon Al-Fahali, a Cardiologist at Campbelltown Hospital, presents. He gives an overview of artificial intelligence for those with no grounding in the topic and then discusses how it is being applied in health research, with particular reference to his research into the potential use of AI to reduce cardiovascular disease through prevention strategies embedded in community care. Judy Reading, Library Manager at Campbelltown Hospital, demonstrates some of the best features (and a few pitfalls) of new AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Consensus and Elicit. No prior knowledge about AI required for this session which starts with basics.
