The novel type 2 diabetes medication tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist. Its efficacy is being tested in the phase 3 SURPASS clinical trial program, with results of the cardiovascular outcomes study and a trial of tirzepatide in people with obesity but without diabetes expected in 2024.
